THE BABY ESSENTIALS: MASTER LIST
Are you a new or expecting mom scrolling through Babylist, reading endless reviews, and trying to figure out what you actually need? I’ve been there...
So, let me save you the scroll... This is the list I wish I had: The Baby Essentials Master List—12 must-have items for your baby’s first year that are practical, high-quality, and actually worth it.
From one mom to another—happy shopping! But remember, the most important thing your baby needs is YOU.
1. Cybex Swivel Car Seat:
Why I love it: Safety Meets Convenience
It is all about the swivel! The Cybex Swivel Car Seat rotates 360 degrees, making it SO easy to get your baby in and out of the car. I loved being able to tilt the seat to face me when sitting in the backseat. Not only is it top-tier safety rated, but you are also able to use the seat while traveling without the base. I am so sad that our time with this seat is coming to an end.
2. Yoyo Stroller:
Why I love it: Compact and Travel-Friendly
For families on the go, the Yoyo stroller is a dream! I really can’t say enough good things about this item. Its lightweight frame, one-hand fold, and airplane cabin approval make it a must-have. Yes…it folds up and fits in the overhead compartments! I love how compact this stroller base is. Many restaurants give push back about strollers because of their size. This stroller is the size of a typical chair so is perfect for going out to eat. Durability is 10/10! We put it to the test—from NYC to Paris—and it still works as good as new. Buy these adapters (LINK) so you can easily click your Cybex Swivel into this Yoyo base. They work with the seat facing in or out. Whether you’re jet-setting or running errands, this stroller is a must-have. We loved it so much that we just upgraded to the toddler seat for year two!
3. Keekaroo Baby Changer:
Why I love it: Functional & Aesthetic
The Keekaroo Baby Changer is waterproof, soft, and wipeable—no need for extra covers or laundry (you already have enough of that as a new mom!) We’ve used this daily for diaper changes, and now it doubles as extra padding for sink baths too!
4. Coterie Diapers and Wipes:
Why I love it: Clean & Convenient
The auto ship is key…set it and forget it. One less thing to worry about. What really sold me? These diapers are ultra-clean—chlorine-free, hypoallergenic, incredibly soft, and super absorbent. I can't believe our next size will be the pull-ons (insert ugly mom cry).
5. Kyte Baby Onesies:
Why I love it: Aesthetic Comfort
If you buy only one type of onesie, make it this one! The bamboo fabric is buttery soft, breathable, and the neutral color palette is perfection. I reached for these over every other brand time and time again. I love that they could double as pjs or an outfit for the day. The sizing runs on the smaller side. Expecting moms: I recommend buying 5 NB and 5 0-3 to start. Once Santé started crawling, we switched from footed styles to rompers—so he could grip with his feet! I just restocked on this brand this morning in size 2T and will be trying the long sleeve sets—will keep you posted. I’ve continued to buy 4-5 in each size range.
6. Skip Hop Baby Activity Center:
Why I love it: Engaging & Easy to Travel With
As your baby outgrows their play mat and is more interested in standing, you will transition to the activity center. In our house, this was officially dubbed the ‘Space Station’—and for good reason! It keeps babies entertained while also supporting their development with engaging toys that encourage motor skills. It breaks down easily and is great to travel with.
7. Fisher-Price Deluxe Kick & Play Piano Gym:
Why I love it: Interactive & Stimulating
I don’t know the science behind this mat, but trust me- it works! Especially the purple monkey... IYKYK. My son loved being on this mat. In the beginning we would place the dock-a-tot on the mat for added support, but eventually this is where he learned to roll over, grab for items, and so much more. Lights, music, and hanging toys stimulate your baby’s senses and encourage movement at a great price point!
8. Harppa Baby Gate Playpen:
Why I love it: Safe Play Area
Once your baby is on the move, you need a secure spot for your little one to explore. That time came MUCH sooner than I expected or was prepared for so I recommend buying this sooner than later. This playpen creates a spacious and sturdy play area where your baby can safely explore. I paired the gate with two of these pads (LINK). They were an investment piece I do NOT regret! They are thick, high-quality, and provide the perfect cushioning for a safe play space—we still use them daily and love them!
9. Lovevery Subscription Box:
Why I love it: Developmental Toys Delivered
Lovevery takes the guesswork out of choosing toys- one less thing for you to think about! Their subscription boxes are tailored to your baby’s developmental stage, offering beautiful, high-quality toys that make playtime fun and educational. I loved watching Santé learn through playing and we looked forward to every new box.
10. Tushbaby:
Why I love it: The Carrier You’ll Actually Use
Out of all the carriers I tried, this one takes the cake! So simple yet so genius—think of it as a fanny pack with a built-in baby seat! No buckles, no adjusting, just strap and go. We laugh that the Tushbaby is a staple in my husband’s wardrobe. He ALWAYS has it on! My son is close to 30lbs and we still use this every day. Order it now, your back will thank you later!
11. Vava Baby Monitor:
Why I love it: No WiFi No Hassle
I knew I didn’t want a baby monitor that operated on WiFi, and the Vava was the perfect choice! It delivers crystal-clear video and audio, long battery life, and a long range. I love the convenience of this monitor and how easy it is to move around the house (as opposed to other stationary ones) and travel with.
12. Dear Zoo Board Book:
Why I love it: The Perfect First Book
Hands down Santé’s 1st favorite book. Dear Zoo is interactive and fun, with flaps that your little one will love to lift. We had so much fun and so many laughs reading this book together.
I hope this list saves you time and makes your life as a mom just a little bit easier.
